The Holy Bible with Illustrations by Gustave Doré. London: Cassel, Petter, and Galpin, 1866
Essay in response to David and Goliath: The Story of The Underdogs by Malcom Gladwell
What is David?
Car
Vulnerable parts of us
Skill, mindset, truth, “disability”,
Why is David on a road?
We think of like as a journey where we need to reach some destination
What is a Goliath?
Road block
Excuses
Self Serving Attribution- self protection strategy
External forces are the reason why we perform poorly or aren't able to achieve things
Self Handicapping- ready made obstacles
Why do we make Goliaths’
Comforting
Rather be stopped then lost
Pg 148 Ch Jay Freireich. Mac Curdy wrote about the Blitz
“ We are all of us not merely liable to fear, we are also prone to be afraid of being afraid”
We don't know where this road goes and it's scary.
How do we get rid of these Goliaths’?
Same chapter
“The conquering of fear produces exhilaration. The contrast between the previous apprehension and the present relief and feeling of security promotes a self confidence that is the father and mother of courage”
- We have to understand our own self worth to beat the goliath
- Not just about beating a Goliath. Liberate ourselves from all Goliath’s
LOVE LIBERATES
Mom compares her daughter to the other influential women. The Daughter says
Suppose she's right. She's intelligent . She says she's too mean to lie. Let's suppose I am going to be somebody. She released me. She freed me to say I may have something in me that can be of value. Maybe not just to me. That’s love.
-”She” MOM= Us Daughter= Our David. The vulnerable part of yourself. Skill, mindset, truth, dis
- There’s a difference between acknowledging our David and Loving our David
Now What? Where does this road go?
Same video
“Love doesn’t bite. Love says I love you even when you're in China, cross town, or in ireland. I love you. I would like to be near you, I would like to have your arms around me and your voice in my ear. But that's not possible now, so go.”
- We like to keep out vulnerabilities close.
- Coddle it like its a child and protect it from the outside world.
- The mom let her daughter move out.
- Let her make mistakes
- everytime she got hurt or knocked down, she went back home and the mom accepted her with open arms
- We need to accept that were going to make mistakes
- Pick ourselves up.
- When you think like this, road seems less scary
- Let your David out there and let it struggle but also make sure it keeps going because we love our david
- Love Liberates.
Why is it a Road?
Doesn’t a road only go one way?
Isn’t a road something that gets you someplace?
Road is an illusion.
Something we create for ourselves.
Gives us direction, path, comfort,
“ If we keep going forward, we will eventually reach our destination or out potential
Road represents unconventional thinking
Like a bike. Goes Forward
What direction does this go? Does it matter?
Stop thinking of it like a Road, more possibilities
Forward, backwards, sideways.
Car “ David” Big 3D space.
Cant have a roadblock if theres no road
BUT then why does it have to be a car?
Back of the book - Goldfish
Not limited to anything
No goliaths
No limit to having to go one direction
So set destination
Take risks
Love liberates and you can push past obstacles
Once you achieve this mindset/realization
Biggest vulnerability can turn into your biggest strength
